The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and public health advocates seek to create a more robust inspection program within the current regulatory process that will better monitor and inspect American food production and its processing network. Shiga-toxin producing E.coli is often implicated as the focus of investigation in haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) events. Past public health warnings have noted salmonella and listeria contamination in food processing plants or farm-centered concerns regarding contaminated foods sources affecting small crops of cucumbers, spinach, or cantaloupe isolated at a particular, identifiable source.

Data presented at the 2012 ASN meeting may have implications for possible future use of Soliris to halt uncontrolled complement activation in serious public health outbreaks of STEC-HUS.
