Irish outbreak continues

22nd October 2012

At least 269 people are now suspected to have fallen ill in an outbreak of E.coli O157:H7 after eating at Flick's restaurant in Belfast, the Public Health Agency (PHA) announced yesterday. The number ill consist of 90 laboratory-confirmed cases and another 179 probable cases. (Probable cases are those with exposure and corresponding symptoms, but who have not been tested for E.coli infection in a clinical laboratory).

The PHA announced that the current outbreak is not connected to an Ecoli outbreak at the same restaurant in August, when 4 people became ill and the bacteria involved in both differed genetically.

Anyone who ate at Flicks restaurant since 24th September and has symptoms of diarrhoea (especially bloody diarrhoea) and/or abdominal pain should contact their GP urgently for medical advice
