Welsh oyster beds reopen

9th December 2011

Oyster beds in the Milford Haven waterway have reopened a month after routine samples found dangerously high levels of E.coli bacteria in the area from the Cleddau Bridge to Picton Point.

Additional samples were collected by the Port Health team on 9th and 23rd November, now confirm that levels have returned to acceptable limits.

Following advice from the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science in Weymouth, and the Food Standards Agency, Wales, the decision to reopen the beds was made.

The closure notice will remain in place for the mussel production area at Lawrenny, as results indicate that E.coli levels remain high in that area.
