Welsh nursery closes after child diagnosed with E.coli O157

A nursery, which opened last year in Wales, to cater for more than 20 children aged three months to school age, has been temporarily closed by public health officials after a child was diagnosed with E.coli O157 and is recovering at home.

Another three children at the Tri Ceffyl Bach Nursery in Amlwch and two adults linked to the childrens daycare centre have also been unwell but test results are not yet known. No one has required hospital treatment.

The original source is still being investigated by the Health protection team of Public Health Wales and owners of the nursery say: "We welcome the outcome of the report and remain confident the original infection was contracted outside of the nursery as we religiously maintain the high level of hygiene dictated by environmental health."

Testing is being offered to children, and parents are being asked to collect stool samples from their children as soon as possible. Further tests will be offered to nursery staff, and those in at-risk groups such as school-age siblings and relatives who are close contacts of people who are unwell.
