E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Harmful bacteria found on 92% of mobile phones

15th October 2011

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have found that more than nine in ten mobile phones are coated with harmful bacteria.

Although 95% of the 390 participants claimed to wash their hands with soap whenever they could, some 16 per cent of hands and phones contained E.coli, which is transmitted in faeces and can cause serious illness and even death.

Some 31% of hands and 25% of phones harboured Staphylococcus aureus (one strain of which is better known as MRSA).

In total 92% of mobile phones and 82% of hands tested had some traces of bacteria.
