E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome


Is the Outbreak of E.coli O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) this summer over?

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) weekly Notifiable diseases: causative agents reports for 2026 (often referred to as NOID’s Notification of infectious diseases), indicates there is a strong possibility that an outbreak of E.coli O157 occurred between week 24 (week ending 14th June 2026) when there were 35 reported cases for that week and 14 cases week ending 27th September 2026 were recorded in this data.

 

The highest week for the number of cases was week 37 (week ending 13th September 2026) when there were 46 cases according to this data as indicated on week 39 (week ending 27th September 2026) data. 

 

The highest number of cases appears to be between week 33 (week ending 15th August) to week 36 (week ending 6th September) when there were approximately 127 cases in these four weeks.

 

The second highest number of cases appear to be between week 29 (week ending 18th July) and week 32 (week ending 8th August) when there were approximately 94 cases in these four weeks.

 

There appears to be no mentioned of this outbreak by any of the government Departments who may be responsible for informing the public etc such as the UKHSA, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the Department of the Environment Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Department of Health and Social care (DHSC) and the Environment Agency.
