E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 and Listeria illness cases looks like increasing yet again in England in 2025.

18th January 2026

From research into the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) weekly reports for NOID’s (Notifiable diseases) causative agents (often referred to as NOID’s Notification of infectious diseases), up to week 52 ending 28th December 2025, the number of reported cases of E.coli O157 in England was 714.

Please note the Non O157 STEC cases are not published weekly by the UKHSA despite us asking them to do so.

This research also indicates there was 231 cases of Listeria monocytogenes.

Although the UKHSA need to officially confirm the numbers above, when they have the time, I believe these figures which are un-confirmed by them are reasonably accurate in relation to what they have published to date for 2025.

The UKHSA stated on 30thJuly 2025 in their most recent annual data for Shiga Toxin producing E.coli (STEC) that cases had risen in England for 2024. It showed “a 26% rise in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections in England in 2024 when compared to 2023. Overall, 2,544 culture-confirmed cases of STEC were reported in England during 2024 – an increase of 26.1% compared to 2023 (2018 cases). These included 564 cases of STEC serotype O157 and 1,980 cases of other STEC serotypes (non-O157)”.

Therefore, we expect there to be around 2000 cases of STEC reported for England in 2025 when the official data is published. This, I believe, is a failure of government departments to address the issues surrounding illness caused by food and environmental issues and despite better laboratory diagnostics, we cannot use that reason solely for policy failures.
