E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Vaccine to reduce E. coli 0157 in cattle shows promise.

21st September 2013

Research by Scientists have indicated that a vaccine given to cattle could reduce the number of cases by nearly 85%. Although one the vaccine manufactures claim to have a success rate of reducing the bacterium by up to 73%, scientist believe the overall benefits could be higher. The only way however to prove that such vaccines are as good as these claims, is to trial it on cattle after it has been shown to be safe in relation to human and animal health. The difficulty is in getting farmers to use it, as they see no benefit because the bacterium does not affect cattle. We urge the Government to at least consider the use of vaccines to combat the bacterium.
