E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Outbreak of E.coli O145 being investigated in US

11th June 2012

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 14 people in 6 different states have been sickened by E. coli O145 over the past couple of months. Three have been hospitalized and 21-month-old Maelan Elizabeth Graffagnini tragically lost her fight for life last week in New Orleans.

Many clinical laboratories do not regularly test for this particular strain of E.coli. However, the O145 strain is one of six additional strains that the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Services recently began testing for in ground beef.

The cause of the outbreak is unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. Infectious disease investigators will interview the victims to determine what exposures they have in common. The CDC says it’s looking at both food and non-food exposures as a source of the outbreak.
