E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

aHUS support group calls for backing

18th September 2011

A support group for sufferers of the rare atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), are calling on the Government to commission a national specialised service for treatment, to fund treatment with complement inhibitors such as eculizumab, and ensure that these services and therapies are available to all patients who need them.

Eculizamab has now been proven to stop the blood complement process which causes the damage to the kidneys and other organs following an episode of HUS. This gives hope to those aHUS patients on dialysis because they will have the opportunity to have a kidney transplant previously denied them because their aHUS condition would recur and destroy the kidney graft. Also it means that future sufferers can be treated with eculizamab before HUS causes the more serious outcomes.

An e-petition has been created at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/16053 and it would be of enormous help to aHUS patients if as many of you would sign by clicking on the link.

If you want to know more about aHUS a website has been developed at www.aHUS.org.uk
