E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Potted meat from Ayr butchers is recalled

16th August 2011

Customers of two butchers shops in Ayr are being asked not to eat any potted meat after some of it was found to have traces of E.coli O157.

Routine food safety sampling by South Ayrshire Council Environmental Health found the bacteria in potted meat from J Martin in Main Road, Whitletts and A Pickens and Sons in Alloway Street.

Council officials said there was no evidence linking the two failed samples and a spokeswoman for South Ayrshire Council said that: Further sampling taken from both premises has not identified E.coli contamination. This information, along with our investigations to date suggests that the previous positive samples are most likely to have been isolated incidents.

Investigations are continuing and Environmental Health is content that the food safety procedures within both businesses are satisfactory and they remain open to trade. No other products were affected.

Notices have been posted in the two shops asking customers to return any uneaten potted meat.
