E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Scottish Figures Rise

12th November 2008

During the first 28 weeks of 2008, Health Protection Scotland received 87 laboratory reports of E.coli O157 infections, an increase of 20 (30%) on the same period in 2007. Although reports to week 28 in 2007 were 32% lower than the same period in 2006, the increase this year is still noteworthy.

This increase has occurred in most NHS boards, suggesting that environmental factors may play a larger part in the increase than foodborne risks. Up to July 2008, monthly rainfall has been above average in many regions of Scotland and heavy rainfall reportedly preceded a number of livestock-related outbreaks in previous years.
