Prof Hugh Pennington Nominated to Lead Welsh Inquiry

16th November 2005

The Welsh Assembly cross-party committee responsible for setting up an inquiry into the E.coli outbreak has nominated Professor Hugh Pennington from Aberdeen University as Chairman.

Professor Pennington is a leading microbiologist and headed the inquiry into the country's largest outbreak, after 20 elderly people died and almost 500 people became infected in Central Scotland during 1996.

He told BBC Radio Wales today (16th November) that  9 years on from his earlier inquiry, E.coli continued to be a danger.  He added "I'd hoped in 1996-97 that we'd at least seen the food side of things sorted out and all we needed to do was to implement things that we had recommended.  Clearly that's not turned out to be the case so we have unfinished business with this very nasty adversary".

Professor Pennington's appointment, together with the terms of reference, will now go before the whole Assembly  (probably during December) for approval.
