E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Further Cases in Wales

16th November 2005

The Puffins Nursery in Brecon has been closed over the weekend and St David's Church in Wales Primary in Colwinston was closing Monday and Tuesday following further cases of E.coli O157.

Parents have been urged to look out for symptoms of ill health in their children.  E.coli O157 can cause diarrhoea that is sometimes bloody.  Should this happen, contact should be made with the GP who will arrange for a stool sample to be tested.

A small percentage of cases will go on to develop HUS (Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome) and the first indication of this is normally a reduced urine output as the kidneys fail.  Parents suspecting this are urged to seek medical attention immediately.

Officials have said that a connection with the South Wales cases last month had been neither established, nor ruled out.
