Supermarkets Fail to Warn Public of Health Risks from Unpasteurised Cheese

12th November 2004

Over the summer HUSH members have been carrying out a follow up survey on the the labelling of unpasteurised cheese sold in supermarkets throughout England and Scotland.

Original findings were presented to Melanie Johnston, MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, at a meeting in July 2004 during which she considered the voluntary labelling to be sufficient. However she accepted there may be an issue regarding legibility of the labels.

The charity gave permission for the findings to be discussed with retailers and manufacturers yet to date we can find no sign of change or improvement.

Unpasteurised cheese is a potential health risk to the young, elderly, immuno-compromised and pregnant women, yet many in these susceptible groups may be unknowingly buying or eating these products.
