E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Outbreaks of E.coli in Scottish Nurseries in August and September

3rd October 2022

There were 56 confirmed case of E.coli at nurseries in East Lothian in an outbreak in August and another outbreak in September linked to a nursery in Biggar, Lanarkshire, where there are presently 5 confirmed cases.

As stated previously on this website in relation to the outbreak in East Lothian, news reports suggest that some of the children that were admitted to hospital were in a stable condition at that time and that whilst most of the cases are considered to be mild this does not take away from the stress that many families have suffered.

Whilst the local health authority etc. stressed the need for isolation for sufferers not hospitalised, which is the correct thing to do until they have had two negative tests to indicate they are clear of this bacterium, they need to consider the following:

It can be very difficult financially etc. to isolate and therefore help should be given to those families or people who require it, otherwise the policy of isolation does not always work.  This was demonstrated during the Covid -19 pandemic, as some people who had Covid-19 went to work as they couldn’t afford not to go and thus spread it to others.

Government etc. know this but, I believe, have refused to take a fully holistic approach to isolation policies or procedures.

Anyone who was or is hospitalised should have their kidneys etc. checked to ensure no damage has been caused by the bacterium.
