Seven dead and more than 100 infected with E.coli from contaminated pickles in Japan

21st August 2012

A E.coli outbreak in Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, is responsible for the death of seven people, and causing 103 more to be sick. The cause has been connected to eating pickled cabbage that was tainted with E.coli bacteria, and Japanese health officials say it’s the deadliest mass food poisoning the country has experienced in the last 10 years. Six of those who perished were sadly elderly women (mostly in their 90s) who ate the contaminated cabbage at nursing homes, while the seventh was a 4 year-old girl.

An investigation has begun, but it is not yet known how the pickled cabbage was contaminated. The Hokkaido Prefectural Government has issued a health bulletin that states the pickled cabbage came from a Sapporo-based company, and produced in late July.
