Selfridges temporarily suspends the sale of raw milk

10th May 2012

Selfridges has temporarily stopped selling unpasteurised milk after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed that the sale of raw cows’ milk from retail premises is an offence under current food hygiene regulations. The FSA and its experts insist that raw milk (which is not heat-treated or pasteurised to kill off harmful bacteria) is a public health threat.

Present regulations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only allow unpasteurised cows milk to be sold direct to consumers from farms or the farmer (including farmers' markets). It has been banned for human consumption in Scotland since 1983.

As Longleys Farm in Hailsham, East Sussex, were selling the product from dispensers in its food hall, which they rent from Selfridges and stock, the company claimed that this qualified as a 'direct sale'.
