E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

French authorities still investigating frozen pizza as the cause of an outbreak of E.coli O26 & O103 strains.

25th April 2022

As of 13/04/2022, French officials have confirmed 53 cases have been identified, of which 51 are related to STEC O26 strain, and 2 to STEC O103 strain. Sadly, it is reported two children have died. At least 6 of these children have developed Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS) a form of kidney failure.

There was one adult involved in this outbreak, the rest were children.

Another 26 other cases are currently being investigated.

French health officials have linked the outbreak to a type of Nestlé frozen pizza Buitoni Fraich’UP pizza. It is though that the dough used to make them may have caused the problem.

It is reported that French prosecutors have searched a Buitoni frozen pizza factory in Caudry, Northern France, the suspected source of the E. coli outbreak.

Also Nestle France, whose headquarters outside Paris were also raided, announced a recall of the affected Fraich’UP pizzas on March 18, and authorities ordered a halt of their production at their Caudry factory at after carrying out two hygiene inspections.

The inspections “revealed a deterioration of food hygiene controls”, the presence of “rodents” and “insufficient measures to prevent pests from contaminating a food production site.”

It was further reported that an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and deceitful practices was opened on 1 April by French authorities.
