E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Ayr butchers in the clear after cross-contamination blunder

22nd August 2011

The owners of A Pickens and Sons and John Martin butchers in Ayr were told last Friday that traces of E.coli O157 had been found in samples of potted meat taken from their shops the previous Monday.

However, it has been revealed that the samples were cross-contaminated during tests at the Glasgow Scientific Services laboratory (GSS).

Now John Martin butchers owner Grahame Arnott, and Gordon and Colin Picken, of Pickens, have consulted their lawyers about taking action against GSS.

Colin Picken said: "Our name has been tarnished through no fault of our own. It's been on the local radio all last weekend that we had been identified as a source of E coli."

A GSS spokesman said: "The authorities involved are well aware that the verbal result given ahead of the confirmation by the reference lab is an unconfirmed result and will have taken this into account before acting."
