E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

European Commission allocates 2.1 million euros to E.coli research

15th August 2011

Cardiff Council has closed the Adonis Kebab House on City Road as a precaution after customers became ill with E.coli O157. Seven people have tested positive and three remain in isolation wards at the University Hospital of Wales, where their condition has been described as stable.

Public health officers and environmental health teams from Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Vale of Glamorgan are investigating. People with the bacterium, one of whom is recovering in hospital, are being asked to fill in a detailed questionnaire by public health officials as they try to confirm the source.

Letters have been sent to GPs and out-of-hours services across south east Wales to alert them. The incubation of E. coli 157 is approximately a week, so with the first cases identified in the last few days, it is likely that more cases will come to light soon.
