HUSH response to the Call for Evidence on Animal Health, Welfare and Food Safety Review of EU Legislation

2nd March 2013

HUSH has recently submitted a response to the Call for Evidence on Animal Health,  Welfare and Food Safety Review of EU Legislation from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs [DEFRA]. This call for evidence also involves the Food Standards Agency [FSA].

Whilst the European Union comes in for a lot of criticism, the European Commission on their behalf have done a considerable amount in the last ten years to improve food safety as well as animal health and welfare through their legislation.

For example, in their hygiene legislation they have stated what is required to produce food safely, and firmly put the responsibility for this on the Food business' involved.

Whilst the charity would wish to see them go even further, their legislation is far more helpful in protecting the consumer than anything prior to it.
