E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Kent Schools Closure

13th July 2006

Hayes Primary School in Kent was closed on 30th June after a number of pupils tested positive for E.coli O157. To date there has been a total of 39 confirmed cases.

Two cases linked to Parklands Nursery, Bromley, have also been confirmed. The Health Protection Agency have stated that one of the nursery victims is a "close family contact" of a pupil at the primary school.  Parklands Nursery closed voluntarily on 5th July.

Authorities are attempting to trace the source of the outbreak  and the schools have been closed to allow thorough cleaning and reduce the possibility of person-to-person spread.
